Situated near the town of Arras, Maroeuil Wood hasn’t always looked the way it does now. During the First World War, the site was almost razed to the ground by the Allies for shoring up the trenches during the Battle of Vimy Ridge.
The wood was then quarried for Ostricourt sandstone. The traces of this quarrying (holes) are still visible on the north-eastern part of the wood. This explains the current young afforestation, which is partly the result of post-war replanting.
The site, partly accessible to people with reduced mobility, will introduce you to the life of the forest. Perhaps you might come across a squirrel or roe deer passing by along the way…
