The Grand Marais d’Etaing is a great example of how an agricultural area relatively poor in biodiversity can be restored as a wet meadow recolonised naturally by protected plant species! This restoration is made possible by extensive grazing by Highland cows (hardy Scottish breed) and Flemish Red cows (local breeds). The old White Willows which, when pollarded, make shelters for animals such as the Little Owl, are also well worth seeing. Today, this site is home to 29 species of dragonflies, or 50% of the odonate species in the region.
